Winter Tires vs. All-Season Tires: What's the Difference?

Snow Tire

Are you in the midst of an all-season vs. winter tires conundrum? Winter tires may be designed for the cold season, but aren’t all-season tires good all year round? How important are winter tires? While all-season tires can work well on your Land Rover vehicle during the winter months in a climate that has moderate winters, they’re not ideal for some of the particularly harsh winters we get in the Merriam area. Our service department wants you to be safe on the road, so we’ve put together winter tires vs. all-season tires comparison below.

Winter Tires vs. All Season – Winter Weather

All-season tires can perform great when the temperature is above 45 degrees. Once the temperature drops below that, however, the rubber on these tires will stiffen, reducing your car’s grip on the road. But winter tires are built with more flexible rubber that will not stiffen in temperatures below that mark, giving you better control on our Wichita roads.

Winter Tires vs. All Season – Frigid Temperatures

  • Below 45 degrees – Snow tires perform better as they do not stiffen in cold weather
  • Above 45 degrees – All-season tires perform better as they do not wear down as fast on warm, dry pavement.

All Season vs. Winter Tires – Icy Road Conditions

Winter tires are great for icy or cold, wet roads because, in addition to being made with rubber that won’t stiffen in cold weather, they are also designed with a special tread pattern that will shed water and snow, providing for better traction on your St. Louis, MO commutes. At this point, you may be wondering why you wouldn’t just leave winter tires on your car all year round. That’s because their tread wears down more quickly on warm, dry pavement.

All Season vs. Winter Tires – Road Conditions

  • Snow, icy, or cold wet roads – Winter tires
  • Warm, dry pavement – All-season tires

How Important are Winter Tires?

So, how important are winter tires? Driving with winter tires on your Land Rover vehicle on icy, snowy roads can mean the difference between life and death. They provide extra traction when your automobile needs it the most.
